Welcome! Please read this entire page, as it contains important class information.
- Training is a great step toward a better-behaved, well-mannered dog. It’s also an opportunity to strengthen your relationship, build more trust, boost your dog’s confidence, and have some fun!
- You must provide proof of vaccinations before your dog will be allowed in class. All dogs must be current on rabies, distemper, and bordetella vaccinations prior to the start of class.
- Equipment you will need for class:
- All dogs must be on a six-foot leash. Retractable or flexi-leads are NOT allowed in class.
- All dogs must be on buckle collars, head halters or harnesses. Choke chains, prong or electronic collars are NOT allowed in class.
- Bring at least 3 different kinds of treats. The best treats are SMALL, SOFT and SMELLY. Do not assume the treats your dog loves at home will work in class. Please read the Treats section and/or the Treats section of the Recommended Products webpage for ideas.
- Find a container to carry treats - a bait bag, fanny pack, pants with large pockets, or something else. You can purchase inexpensive nail aprons (the kind that tie around your waist) at Home Depot. You can see what a bait bag looks like on our list of Recommended Products.
- For Puppy Preschool and Juvenile Delinquents Classes only, please bring 2-3 different toys. We prefer these be toys that do not squeak so as to distract the other puppies. A filled Puppy Kong, chewing bone or similar toy is recommended for at least one of these toys.
- For Puppy Preschool and Juvenile Delinquents Classes only, please bring a dog bed or blanket. It is possible these items might need to be cleaned after class, so please bring items that you can easily wash or clean.
- OPTIONAL: We encourage, but do not require, you to try clicker training. Clickers can be a very effective way to communicate more clearly with your puppy or adult dog. We sell clickers with wrist coils for $2 or you may bring your own. For more information on clickers, click here.
- If class is near your dog’s normal mealtime, please wait until after class to feed your dog. Your dog will be more interested in your treats and more responsive to training.
- Please do not bring a sick dog to class. However, we do recommend that you still come to class without your dog so you don’t miss anything.
- We encourage the entire family to participate in training. Your dog will be much happier if everyone in the house is consistent. We ask that small children be left home. However, older children are encouraged to attend. (Please use your best judgment as to whether or not to bring your child along.)
- Please dress appropriately for working with your dog, including shoes that will not easily fall off. Weather permitting, some classes will be held outdoors. Click here to check the weather.
- In the case of inclement weather, we reserve the right to postpone a class. If this happens, you will be contacted as soon as possible, and the class will be rescheduled.
- If you know that you will not be able to attend a class, please let us know as soon as possible. You can arrange time to meet with us before or after an adjoining class.
We look forward to seeing you at class!
