Treats and Food Products

Natural Balance Dog Food/Treat Rolls - This is my personal favorite for training treats. This dog food comes in a sausage-type roll, so it's soft and smelly and can be cut up in small pieces - perfect for training! Plus, it is a healthier option than the lower value dog treats AND dog foods you see in most stores. The price is very reasonable and you can cut them into whatever size treats you need for your size dog.

Freeze Dried Products - There are several choices, including: Liver, Beef, Chicken, Turkey and Salmon. Freeze dried liver can make a good training treat. However, be careful about feeding too many of these to your dog until you see if his/her digestive system can handle it. Since liver can be very rich, some dogs will get some digestive upset if fed too much at once.

Solid Gold Jerky Treats - These are another great treat option. They come in large pieces but are soft enough to be easily broken into smaller pieces. Although soft, they don't leave you with messy hands, so they work great for training on the go! These are not available at Sitstay or Pet Expertise but are at Pet Outfitters or you can search for a retailer to purchase online.

Plato Smart Dog Treats Salmon Strips - These are another great treat option. They come in large pieces but are soft enough to be easily broken into smaller pieces.

Real Meat Treats - These are more expensive, but they are also healthy treats. They are jerky-type treats and come in a variety of meats. This is another option to try if you have a finicky dog.

California Natural Health Bars - If you like to feed your dog biscuits as a special treat, try these. They contain healthier ingredients than many of the dog biscuits you can find in the regular stores. My dogs love these biscuits and I don't have to worry about feeding them junk food. These are not available at Sitstay or Pet Expertise, but are at Pet Outfitters or you can search for a retailer to purchase online.

Dry Dog Food - There are many high quality premium dog foods from which to choose. I do feed (or have fed) my dogs California Natural made by Naturapet. You can find more information about this food and their other products at their website. They include the ingredient list and what each ingredient really is and why they use it. The also provide a comparison to ingredients of a variety of other dog foods. It is a great educational tool if you have never paid much attention to the ingredients in the dog food you buy. In addition, I also do (or have fed) Pinnacle made by Breeder's Choice. Although both of these are high quality dry foods, that does not mean either one is the right food for your dog. If you are not sure what is the right food for your dog, read "Choosing the Right Dry Dog Food for Your Dog".

I purchase all of my food from Pet Outfitters, located at Holly and Orchard in Englewood, CO. They carry high quality food and other products and provide great service, including special ordering of certain products which they might not normally carry in stock.

Interactive Toys

While some dogs can entertain themselves with a ball, frisbee or stuffed toy, many need interactive toys to entertain themselves without your help. Consider buying some of the following or other similar products to help keep your dog active even when you aren't there or don't have time to play with him/her.

Kong toys - These are the original version, but Kong has several different versions of toys that you can fill with food or treats to keep your dog occupied. You can fill with regular dog food and/or any variety of treats you can find that your dog likes. Try to stick with mostly healthy treats!

Twist-n-Treat by Busy Buddy - This is another great interactive toy. I fill this one with my dogs' dry food and rarely with treats. They love it! Busy Buddy also makes several other toys, such as the Squirrel Dude, which is similar to the original Kong but shaped like a squirrel and it's much more challenging to remove treats.

Moleculeball - This is another great toy that allows your dog to work for his food. I use it mainly for dry food with a few tasty treats added in. My greyhound prefers this to the Buster Cube and so do I now, since it's not as noisy!

Buster Cube

Buster Cube -I use only dry dog food in the Buster Cube. Give your dog a chance to work for some of his/her dinner instead of just eating it out of the bowl. Occasionally, my Collie is not interested in breakfast in his bowl, but it becomes much more interesting to him if it's in a Buster Cube or other toy. Be forewarned, however, that the Buster Cube can be very noisy when being knocked around. So you might not want to use it when you would like some peace and quiet.

Intelligent toys - There are several varieties of these intelligent toys. Take a look and see if your dog might like one of these.
