Dog doorbells - If your dog does not have a clear signal to let you know she needs to go out, or you do not particularly like her current signal (such as barking or scratching at the door) you might consider teaching your dog to ring a bell to go out. You can find bells at a craft store or other place and make your own. However, if you plan to use this for the remainder of your dog's life, you might want something that looks nice. Consider trying Poochie-Bells. I have found the bells they use to give a better ring than many of the bells I was able to find elsewhere. The design looks attractive hanging on your door, and they have a wide variety of fabric designs from which to choose. I have also found their service to be excellent. Check them out!

Poochie-bells and other similar products are sold at Pet Outfitters, a local retailer we use and recommend.

Bait bags - If you want a handy way to carry your treats, consider a bait bag. There are many varieties and brands, but the price is right on this Outward Hound version.

Quiet Spot (tag silencer) - Tired of those tags jangling all the time? Just imagine if you were the one having to wear those around your neck all day! I could not believe how quiet my first walk was after I bought these for the tags on both my dogs! I will never have jangling tags again!

Nature's Miracle or other enzymatic cleaners - Always keep some enzymatic cleaner on hand just in case. If there are any accidents in the house, an enzymatic cleaner is essential for cleanup or you will never get the smell out.

Direct Stop citronella spray - I carry this product with me every time I walk my dogs. While it will not stop the most aggressive of attackers, it can be effective for mildly aggressive dogs. It is supposed to be as effective as pepper spray, but is not harmful in case you accidentally spray your own dog or yourself.

Pet Seat Belts - When traveling with your dog, a secure crate is generally considered the safest option for transporting your pets. However, you might want to consider a seat belt for your dog if a crate just won't work for you. While it might not protect your dog in a serious accident, it should keep him from distracting you while driving and help to secure him during sudden stops. If you want to learn more about the safety of pet seat belts, Whole Dog Journal has an article in their February 2004 issue.

A Word About the Pet Supply Retailers I Recommend

There are plenty of places you can purchase most of these products, so why do I recommend Sitstay for most of these products? I have personally used Sitstay for most of my dog-related purchases. I have never had a problem with any orders, and they are always shipped promptly with no mistakes. Excellent customer service as well as reasonable prices are high on my priority list. I have shopped around a lot to get the best prices on the things I buy - trust me, I am a bargain shopper. I actually am an accountant as well as a dog trainer! Sitstay has prices that are comparable to the best I have found - some things are higher, some are lower, but overall, I have not found anyplace that consistently beats their price and service.

In addition, Sitstay donates funds to nonprofit organizations and does not affiliate with sites that sell or list dogs or puppies for sale unless the dogs/puppies are neutered/spayed.

As a side note, I do have an affiliate relationship with Sitstay and Poochie-Bells, which means that if you click the links from my website to these retailers and purchase any products, I will receive a small commission. I appreciate it when my website visitors purchase through these links, as it helps me to offset the cost of purchasing new products to test so I can tell you what works well!

If you prefer to purchase products locally, you can find many of these same products, along with other high quality products at local stores such as Pet Outfitters, a local store I frequent and recommend. Other local stores I recommend include Lewis & Bark and Chewy’s Bonetique. If the product you are looking for is not in stock, they will often order it for you. If you live near Deer Creek Animal Hospital or VCA Southeast Animal Hospital, they carry a limited supply of products. I conduct group class training sessions through these veterinary hospitals.
