Juvenile Delinquent Dogs: The Complete Guide to Saving Your Sanity and Successfully Living With Your Adolescent Dog by Sue Brown, MNM, CDBC, CPDT-KA. In my search for resources on adolescent or teenage dogs, I found very little, so I wrote the book myself. This book covers just about everything you need to know: knowing what to expect, what is “normal” or not, how to train most effectively, how and when to use management, how to properly socialize your dog, and how to address the myriad of problems that can arise during this age. Read and get started with Part One, then keep Part Two handy as a reference guide to refer back to throughout adolescence - and perhaps beyond - as problem behaviors arise.

Teaching “Come”
Really Reliable Recall (DVD and booklet) by Leslie Nelson - If you want to teach your dog to come when it really counts, Leslie Nelson's Really Reliable Recall - or some variation of it - is probably the most-used method by positive reinforcement dog trainers today. If coming when called is all you really want from your dog, then invest in the DVD and/or the booklet. In regard to coming when called, if I could only recommend one product, I would have to go with Leslie Nelson's Really Reliable Recall.

Whatever Happened to the Term Alpha Wolf? by L. David Mech. While we did not write this article, we felt it well worth adding to our list of articles as it addresses the issue of the "alpha" as it relates to wolves. It's written by L. David Mech, who is a senior research scientist for the U.S. Geological Survey and founder and vice chair of the International Wolf Center. He has studied wolves for over 50 years and published several books and many articles about them.

The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D - This is a bit longer read than most of her other books. However, if you have the time and would like to understand how to better communicate with your dog, this is one of the best books you will find. McConnell is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, which means she has a Ph.D in animal behavior, so she really knows her stuff. This is without a doubt my favorite book and I highly recommend it!

This is another great book for helping us better understand our dogs and is the best collection of easy-to-read scientific evidence as to why we should not use “wolf pack theory” to train our dogs.

Don’t Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor - This book and the next book, Culture Clash, are considered "classics" when it comes to discussing the learning theory behind current dog training methods. Despite the title, this book was originally written in regard to changing the behavior of people not dogs. So, if you want to learn how to train your spouse, children, roommate, coworker, or others, read this book! This and the next book listed are both very good if you really want to dig into the details of how/why certain methods work. If you really just want a well-behaved dog and don't care so much about the how and why, then these are not for you.
